skincancerWhat is Skin Cancer?

Skin cancer is the most prevalent of all cancers. It affects more than 2 million Americans every year. The most common types of cancer are basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. The names reflect the cell within the skin from which the particular type of skin cancer arises. More than 1 million cases of each of these forms of skin cancer are diagnosed in the United States each year. Malignant melanoma, which is a less common form of skin cancer, affects more than 80,000 Americans annually. While significant sun exposure raises the risk of developing all forms of skin cancer, malignant changes in the skin also may occur in areas that have been exposed to relatively little sun over the years.

Fortunately, most skin cancers are visible and can be diagnosed and successfully treated before they spread to other parts of the body. In fact, many lesions can be detected and treated in a precancerous stage – the point at which their cells may be close to turning cancerous but have not yet.

At AUDREY ECHT, MD, PA Dermatology and Skin Cancer Center, we offer comprehensive screenings and examinations for those patients who have not been diagnosed with skin cancer but are concerned about their sun exposure or risk factors.
