Verruca Awareness Month

We see many patients who are concerned about the appearance of warts. While considered common, there may be certain cases where warts need to be professionally examined and/or removed. Fortunately, if you’re worried about warts, all you need is a dermatologist!

The National Verruca Foundation has designated July as Wart Awareness Month. As peak season begins, The Foundation hopes to help reduce wart transmission through education and awareness activities. This month-long observance provides individuals, doctors, and community-based organizations an excellent opportunity to address ways to prevent the millions of cases that appear each year in the United States.

While you’re trying to get rid of warts, don’t scratch or pick at them. This makes them worse and also spreads them to additional parts of the body. It will take time to get rid of warts. You may have to use treatments repeatedly; some require every day administration. Even then, it can take weeks, or sometimes, months. To prevent contracting and/or spreading warts this Summer, follow these guidelines:

1. Don’t share towels, razors, or socks with others.

2. Wash your hands well and often.

3. Cover cuts with a bandage.

4. Don’t bite or chew your fingernails or cuticles.

5. Don’t touch other people’s warts.

6. Wear flip flops around pools and in locker rooms and yoga studios.
